EKG (ELECTROCARDIOGRAM) TEST
ABOUT THE SERVICES
An EKG test — also called ECG, electrocardiogram or electrocardiography — is a popular diagnostic procedure that records the electrical activity of the heart. The data it provides can assist your doctor in detecting abnormalities in the heart rate or rhythm and may be used to rule out a number of possible irregularities.
The test is conducted by a technician who begins by attaching about 10 small electrode patches to the skin on the chest, arms and legs.
EKG tests may be carried out while your heart is at rest, in which case the resting EKG is performed while you are lying flat on your back. EKG testing can also measure the heart during activity or physical exertion, in which case you would walk on a treadmill while the EKG is performed.
The test takes just 10 to 15 minutes from start to finish, including the attaching of the electrodes, and is safe, painless and completely non-invasive.
Doctors use EKGs to check heart rhythms; identify the possibility of poor circulation or blood flow to and from the heart; confirm or rule out the occurrence of a heart attack; and to check for other abnormalities of the heart, such as cardiac arrhythmia or thickening of the heart muscle. Changes in the heart’s performance can sometimes be seen by comparing a series of EKGs performed over a period of time.
