X-Fit exercises train the muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks, by simulating common movements that might be carried out at home, at work or in sports. Whilst using various muscles in the upper and lower body at the same time, functional fitness exercises also emphasize core stability.
X-Fit works to improve stamina, strength, stability and flexibility. A series of functional movements are carried out that incorporate resistance training and body weight training. X-Fit was founded in 2000 in California and is now offered in over 13,000 gyms around the world. The split between male and female participation is around 50%, making it equally popular amongst men and women. The strength and conditioning program combines primarily aerobic exercises, calisthenics, and Olympic weightlifting. The program’s founders describe is as “Constantly varied functional movements executed at high intensity across broad time and modal domains.” Each session is around an hour long and includes a warm up period, a time dedicated to developing a particular skill, and a high-intensity workout which varies from class to class (also known as the WOD – Workout Of The Day – offering lots of variety, along with working all the different muscle groups).
There are a number of equipment pieces used during the workouts, which may include barbells, dumbbells, rings, pull-up bars, skipping ropes, medicine balls, resistance bands and mats. The training is inspired by a number of pre-existing disciplines, including strongman training, triathlon training, Olympic-style weightlifting and calisthenics. The class enables participants to improve their fitness levels in areas like cardiovascular fitness, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy.
