Thanyapura is Asia’s premier sports centre

Asia's premier sports centre

Thanyapura Phuket has been backed by the Ministry of Sports and Tourism as Asia’s premier sports centre. The next few months are packed with exciting developments here at Asia’s premier sports centre.

Thanyapura is set to become the “sports hub of Asia” – after support was given from the Minister of Sports and Tourism Mrs. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul and her colleagues in Bangkok. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has welcomed a number of exciting projects at Asia’s premier sports centre Thanyapura Phuket, that will make Southeast Asia shine as a sports destination.

The Thanyapura Management Team met with Mrs. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, the Minister of Tourism and Sports and her team in Bangkok recently to discuss some exciting new future projects. The main agenda was the topic of Thanyapura Phuket becoming the official FINA Training Centre in Southeast Asia.

The Minister and her team were delighted with the good news and have offered full support for the project. They said that what Thanyapura Phuket is trying to achieve is in sync with what the Ministry has been aiming for, which is to build Thailand as the hub of sports and tourism in Asia.

Thanyapura Phuket has teamed up with FINA – the aquatics governing international body – to award 38 scholarships to talented Southeast Asian swimmers. As part of the scholarship, the swimmers will train and live at our world class facility for the year while preparing for the 2016 Rio Olympics. Each scholar will receive a wildcard entry for both the Rio Olympics and the 2015 FINA World Championships.

The scholarship, which is dubbed ‘Targeting Rio 2016’, has received attention from some of the best up and coming swimmers around Southeast Asia. The Targeting Rio 2016 Team has been selected from 19 countries. These countries include Thailand, China, Taipei, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Philippines, Timor Leste, Brunei Darussalam, India, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Macau, Singapore, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Malaysia. Joining the Thanyapura Phuket and FINA ‘Targeting Rio 2016’ team will be a male and female from each nation.

The swimmers have started to arrive and train in our world class sport facilities at Asia’s premier sports centre, with more expected late this month and throughout June. They will train under the head swimming coach Miguel Angel Lopez Alvardo. Thanyapura’s impressive sports facilities include a 50m Olympic competition pool, a 25m training and teaching pool, Omega Track start blocks, a Daktronics timing system, a scoring board, an underwater video analysis window, ozone filtration and sports science services.

The athletes will be exposed to the world class facilities at Asia’s premier sports centre. This includes outstanding coaching, sports scientists, sports psychologists, dietitians, physiotherapists and chiropractors – alongside Thanyapura’s unique three-dimensional coaching model for the mind, body and soul.

The scholars will also use the Thanyapura Mind Centre to make the most of the benefits of mind training.

Other projects that will run alongside our FINA Training Centre include the potential construction of Phuket’s first 100m swimming pool and four additional tennis courts.
