Growth and Development
AN OVERVIEW OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF PIADS – PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE
2008 to 2010
Phuket International Academy Day School (PIADS) opened in August 2008 with Kindergarten and Grades 1-6, in one building, the present Lower Junior School. By the end of its first full year of operation in June 2009 it had been granted International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) Candidate status and had an enrolment of 32 students. The new school year 2009-10 saw a Nursery added, enrolment grow from 40 to over 80 students covering Nursery School to Grade 7. Two new buildings, the Early Childhood Centre, and the Middle School were built to accommodate this growth. By June 2010, PIADS had been granted IB MYP Candidate status.
In August 2010, the school was now Nursery to Grade 8, and with an enrolment of over 100 students it was becoming clear that it was time to build a new Administration centre to incorporate not only the school administration but also the library, medical centre and a staff room. By the end of that academic year, June 2011, the enrolment was 140 students and the school had successfully passed PYP Preauthorisation by the IBO.
With the new Administration Building in operation, the 2011-12 school year opened and a new Middle/Senior School was well on the way to being completed. Enrolment was 180. A second class at a number of Junior School grade levels had been added and the Middle School (Grades 6-8) was consolidating. In March 2012, the new Middle/Senior School was completed and Grades 5-8 moved into this attractive building in April, Term 3. By the end of that school year in June 2012, the school had reached an enrolment of 210 students, and most significantly received full IB Authorisation for the PYP, thereby becoming an IB World School. Simultaneously, PIADS was accepted for membership in the Council of International Schools. The quality of education had been endorsed as world-class.
When the school reconvenes for the 2012-13 school year in August 2012, it will have expanded to Grade 9 and there will be two classes at all grade levels but one in the Junior School. By Third Term, April 2013,a further new building will have been opened with a cafeteria, music studios and practice rooms, and a full assembly and performance facility. In preparation for offering the IB Diploma in August 2014, PIADS will be applying for Candidate status.
Grade 10 will be added in the 2013-14 school year, MYP Authorisation should be completed and it is intended to have selective Boarding introduced, initially on a small scale. In August 2014 it is anticipated that the IB Diploma Programme will commence with the introduction of a Grade 11 class. This class will be PIADS’ first to graduate from Grade 12 in May, 2016. In the period 2012 -16, the school will also go through the Self Study and the Team Visit required to achieve official CIS Accreditation as a Nursery to Grade 12 school.
By 2016 the end of the beginning years should be completed with a world-class, full Nursery to Grade 12 School established and flourishing.
